Judge Krystian Markiewicz criticized President Nawrocki’s selective invitations to newly appointed Constitutional Tribunal judges for their swearing-in ceremony.
Constitutional Tribunal Judges Selected by Sejm
The Sejm elected six judges to the Constitutional Tribunal on March 13th. The President has yet to administer their oaths of office. On Tuesday, March 31st, TVN24 reported that Karol Nawrocki invited two newly elected judges – Dariusz Szostek and Magdalena Bentkowska – to a swearing-in ceremony at the Presidential Palace on Wednesday.
Judge Markiewicz Rejects Invitation Protocol
On Wednesday, Krystian Markiewicz confirmed in an interview on TVN24’s “Rozmowa Piaseckiego” that he did not receive an invitation from Nawrocki. Markiewicz emphasized that judges who did receive invitations should attend the Presidential Palace.
Markiewicz stated their strong desire to take the oath of office.
Concerns Over Potential Protests
When asked if the four judges not invited by Nawrocki might take action, such as attempting to enter the Presidential Palace, Markiewicz responded that, as elected judges of a crucial Polish court, such behavior would be unacceptable. He explicitly rejected any actions like protesting with a megaphone.
Presidential Office to Address Tribunal Situation
Zbigniew Bogucki, Head of the Presidential Chancellery, is scheduled to provide information regarding President Nawrocki’s actions concerning the Constitutional Tribunal on Wednesday at noon.
Presidential Spokesperson Rafał Leśkiewicz stated that Nawrocki intends to “restore order” within the Constitutional Tribunal as the highest representative of the state and guardian of the constitution.
Leśkiewicz also noted that the ruling government had not selected judges for vacant positions on the Tribunal and had previously withheld salaries from Constitutional Tribunal judges.
