Polish Leader Congratulates Hungary’s Magyar on Election Victory

Polish President Karol Nawrocki congratulated Peter Magyar on the victory of his Respect and Freedom Party in the Hungarian parliamentary elections.

Hungarian Election Results

Based on nearly 99% of the votes counted, TISZA is projected to secure 138 seats in the 199-member Hungarian parliament, granting it a two-thirds constitutional majority.

The Fidesz-KDNP coalition, led by Viktor Orbán, received 55 seats, while the far-right Mi Hazank party is expected to gain six seats. Almost 80% of eligible voters participated in the election, totaling nearly 6 million people.

Nawrocki’s Congratulatory Message

Karol Nawrocki extended his congratulations to Peter Magyar on the victory of the Respect and Freedom Party in the Hungarian parliamentary elections, noting the high voter turnout and the strong public mandate given to TISZA.

Nawrocki expressed his belief that Magyar, as prime minister, will implement policies conducive to the economic and social development of Hungary, wishing him success in this endeavor.

Preservation of Polish-Hungarian Relations

Nawrocki expressed hope that the good traditions of Polish-Hungarian relations would be maintained through Magyar’s efforts, emphasizing the importance of the brotherhood between the two nations.

He welcomed Magyar’s announcement of his first foreign visit as Prime Minister to Poland in early May, anticipating a productive exchange of views and outlining future cooperation.

Regional Cooperation and EU Reform

The Polish President also expressed hope for close cooperation in shaping regional collaboration within frameworks like NATO and the Bucharest Nine.

Nawrocki indicated openness to discussing the future of the European Union and necessary reforms, reiterating his congratulations and expressing hope for future direct talks.

Challenges Ahead for Magyar

Dávid Vig, director of Amnesty International Hungary, noted that restoring the independence of institutions influenced by Orbán will be a significant challenge for Magyar, even with a constitutional majority.
