A journalistic investigation reveals that machinery from DMG MORI Poland, a major European manufacturer, is reaching Russia through Turkey and other routes.
DMG MORI Poland and its Role
DMG MORI Poland is the largest machine tool manufacturer in Central Europe. Their CNC machines, used for producing and modifying materials, are crucial in the production of military vehicles and weapons systems.
Circumventing Sanctions After 2022
Following Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, DMG MORI officially withdrew from the Russian market. However, Frontstory reports that their products continued to reach Russia through three methods: disguised civilian orders placed via intermediary companies, continued production within Russian facilities, and the use of third-party services.
The Turkish Intermediary
Frontstory contacted a Turkish intermediary, Pyramid Muhendislik Ticaret. The company representative offered to sell a machine from their catalog, which included DMG MORI products.
A Sting Operation
Frontstory journalists created a fictitious Russian company, claiming to supply the Russian military and seeking to purchase a machine tool for delivery to Russia.
Shipments via Turkey
Customs data indicates that at least 48 DMG MORI-manufactured machine tools were shipped from Turkey to Russia after the start of the war in Ukraine. Some were designated as non-military equipment, a tactic used to bypass sanctions.
Related Developments
Serhiy Danylov, deputy director of the Ukrainian Center for Middle Eastern Studies, noted a shift in Arab perceptions of Ukraine’s role, as reported by Wyborcza.pl.
DMG MORI’s Response
DMG MORI stated they have done nothing wrong and strictly adhere to all export control regulations and sanctions imposed on Russia. They acknowledged the possibility of third parties illegally re-exporting their machines, but Frontstory finds this explanation unconvincing due to the strict controls on DMG MORI products.
