A Polish man, Sebastian M., could face up to eight years in prison after police accused him of causing a high-speed crash that killed three people on the A1 highway, where his car was traveling at over 300 km/h.
High-Speed Collision Allegations
According to the prosecutor’s indictment filed in July 2023, Sebastian M. allegedly modified his car to exceed 300 km/h. Forensic experts reported that the car’s speedometer suggested even higher speeds, nearly 330 km/h, before the crash. The legal speed limit on highways is 140 km/h.
Flight and Legal Proceedings
Sebastian M. fled Poland, prompting a lengthy extradition process. He was officially extradited on May 26. Public outrage and subsequent media attention brought by internet sleuths who analyzed dashcam footage from other vehicles propelled the case into the mainstream.
Court Ruling and Status
The District Court in Piotrków Trybunalski, led by Judge Agnieszka Leżańska, affirmed that Sebastian M. would remain in custody. The court weighed the evidence that his escape was a deliberate attempt to avoid criminal liability.
