Grzegorz Braun appeared before Polish prosecutors in Wrocław but avoided charges, submitting a request to remove the lead prosecutor and delaying proceedings.
Braun Appears Before Prosecutors, Anti-Abortion Protest Held
Grzegorz Braun appeared with his supporters as an anti-abortion picket, attended by approximately ten people, mainly seniors, began outside the prosecutor’s office. Protesters displayed a banner comparing the murder of Maksymilian Kolbe in Auschwitz to abortion.
No Testimony, Request for Recusal Filed
The MEP did not provide testimony but instead filed a complaint alleging misconduct by Judge Kopczyńska and requested her recusal from the case. Consequently, proceedings were suspended pending a decision on the request, with a break scheduled until noon.
Recusal Request Denied, Obstruction Claimed
The prosecutor’s office announced in the afternoon that the request for recusal was rejected, stating there were no grounds for it. The prosecutor accused Braun of deliberately obstructing the proceedings, noting that the court needed to obtain consent from the European Parliament to detain him.
Alleged Breach of Physical Integrity
The case stems from an incident in 2025, where Braun entered the Powiatowy Zespół Szpitali in Oleśnica on April 16th and attempted to prevent gynecologist Gizela Jagielska from working, claiming he was making a “citizen’s arrest.”
Hospital Confrontation Details
Jagielska stated that Braun entered the administrative section, blocked her path, and confined her to an administrative room. She was allegedly prevented from accessing the hospital ward and subjected to insults during the approximately forty-minute ordeal. Braun referred to his actions as a “citizen’s arrest” and demanded Jagielska’s removal and arrest, also calling the police.
Immunity Waiver and Investigation
An investigation was launched into the detention of Gizela Jagielska, with charges filed against other participants in the hospital action, including Marta Czech, an activist from Braun’s party. The European Parliament revoked Braun’s immunity for a second time on November 13, 2025, enabling Polish authorities to press criminal charges against him.
Six Charges Planned, Including Hate Speech
Prosecutors intend to file six charges against Braun, four related to the Oleśnica hospital incident. One charge concerns racist and antisemitic statements made on YouTube, and another relates to the destruction of a photo exhibition from a pride march in Opole.
Previous Hearing and Continued Delays
A previous hearing was scheduled for February 17th, but Braun submitted a request to recuse prosecutor Karolina Stocka-Mycek, leading to the suspension of proceedings. The deputy district prosecutor rejected this request, and further hearings were set for March 4th, but Braun did not appear, providing justification for his absence the previous day.
