Polish Mine Countermeasures Vessels Considered for Strait of Hormuz

Poland possesses advanced mine countermeasures capabilities with its Kormoran II class vessels, but has not been asked to deploy them to the Strait of Hormuz amid rising tensions.

Trump Pressures NATO Over Strait of Hormuz

President Donald Trump has expressed frustration with NATO’s lack of engagement in addressing the blocked Strait of Hormuz, criticizing France, Italy, and Spain for denying access to their bases for potential operations against Iran. He also lamented the lack of European participation in securing the vital waterway.

The Strait of Hormuz, crucial for 20% of global oil transport, has been blocked by Iran, with attacks on tankers and a reported deployment of up to 3,000 mines – Maham 7 and Mahan 3 types – to deter passage.

US Seeks Allied Assistance, Faces Initial Resistance

In mid-March, Trump urged NATO allies to assist in clearing the Strait, acknowledging the US’s limitations. Initial European resistance softened after threats of reduced arms supplies to Ukraine, leading Britain, France, and Germany to begin forming a coalition.

Poland’s Kormoran II Capabilities

Trump suggested that nations reliant on oil from the Strait of Hormuz should take responsibility for its security. Despite Poland possessing some of the world’s most modern mine countermeasures vessels, the Kormoran II class – superior to those used by the US Navy – Washington has not requested their deployment.

The Polish Ministry of National Defence stated that neither the US nor NATO has requested the Kormoran vessels for mine clearance operations in the Strait of Hormuz, and Poland currently has no plans for combat operations in the Middle East.

Poland to Participate in Diplomatic Talks

Poland will participate in a teleconference, initiated by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, involving nearly 40 countries to discuss the future of the Strait of Hormuz. The discussion will focus on diplomatic and political actions to restore freedom of navigation and ensure the safety of shipping.

European leaders have previously indicated that any involvement in clearing the waterway would occur after a cessation of hostilities, but recent statements suggest a potential for military engagement.
