Poland’s Justice Minister Waldemar Żurek alleges a Russian connection to the Zondacrypto cryptocurrency exchange, as the President vetoes legislation regulating crypto assets.
Presidential Veto and Allegations of Russian Involvement
Justice Minister Waldemar Żurek stated that President Karol Nawrocki is fully aware of the Zondacrypto case and has access to all relevant intelligence documents, making his repeated veto of the crypto market act puzzling. Żurek confirmed the existence of a “Russian trace” in the matter.
When questioned by TVN24, Żurek affirmed the President was informed about the origins of the Zondacrypto exchange and the Prime Minister’s claims of “Russian mafia links.” He emphasized the President has complete information.
Investigation into Russian Mafia Funding
Żurek declined to disclose details but reiterated the existence of a Russian connection, confirming statements made by the Prime Minister. He indicated that the investigation will explore potential funding of political groups by Zondacrypto.
Ongoing Criminal Investigation and Reported Victims
The Katowice Regional Prosecutor’s Office launched an investigation on April 17th into Zondacrypto, focusing on fraud and money laundering. Żurek stated that the investigation will examine various aspects, including potential financing of political groups or foundations.
As of the morning of April 19th, the number of individuals reporting fraud by Zondacrypto is estimated to be in the hundreds.
Pre-Trial Delays and Suspect Location
Concerns have been raised about the lack of questioning of Zondacrypto CEO Przemysław Kral, reportedly residing in Israel. Żurek noted that many suspects in financial crimes seek refuge in countries where extradition is difficult, but assured that the prosecution will pursue them.
Second Veto of Crypto Asset Law
On April 17th, the Sejm failed to override President Nawrocki’s veto of the crypto asset law for a second time. The legislation included supervisory measures, such as allowing the KNF to halt public offerings of cryptocurrencies. The President deemed the regulations overly restrictive, while the ruling coalition argues the lack of legislation creates legal loopholes.
Prime Minister Tusk’s Accusations and CPAC Sponsorship
Prior to the vote, Prime Minister Tusk stated that the President’s continued blocking of the law was causing suffering for tens of thousands of people. He alleged that Zondacrypto’s growth began in 2022 with funding from the Russian mafia.
Tusk further claimed that Zondacrypto sponsored political events, including the CPAC Rzeszów event that promoted President Nawrocki and former President Andrzej Duda.
Scrutiny of Past Investigations and Financial Links
Tusk announced a review of the investigation conducted under former Prosecutor General Zbigniew Ziobro, which he characterized as ineffective in the case of Zondacrypto founder Sylwester Suszek’s disappearance. He also alleged that funds from Zondacrypto were directed to Ziobro’s foundation and to Bartosz Lewandowski of Ordo Iuris, who now represents Kral in a legal dispute with Suszek’s sister.
President Nawrocki Denies Responsibility and Claims Lack of Information
President Nawrocki responded by blaming the Tusk government for the potential harm to 30,000 individuals affected by Zondacrypto, stating he did not regret the veto. He claimed he received intelligence information about Zondacrypto *after* issuing his first veto and denied any connection to the company or its representatives.
Zondacrypto Background: Missing Founder and Financial Holdings
Zondacrypto controls a bitcoin wallet worth over $300 million, with the keys held by Sylwester Suszek, the founder of BitBay, Zondacrypto’s predecessor, who disappeared in March 2022. Suszek was last seen at a fuel station owned by Marian W., where surveillance cameras were temporarily disabled. Marian W. faces charges related to Suszek’s alleged kidnapping and large-scale VAT fraud.
