Polish Ministry introduces “Compass of Tomorrow” reform, with more practical education starting September 2026.
Reform26. Compass of Tomorrow – Ministry Meeting in Kalisz
On Monday, Deputy Minister of Education Katarzyna Lubnauer and director of the Educational Research Institute in Warsaw Maciej Jakubowski visited Primary School No. 10 named after Maria Konopnicka in Kalisz, to present the assumptions of “Reform26. Compass of Tomorrow.” During the meeting, 250 teachers, parents and local government officials from the Kalisz region participated.
Program Changes Taking Effect September 2026
The program changes will take effect on September 1, 2026. According to the Vice-Minister of Education, the changes will mean for children, parents and teachers that education will be more practical and friendly. “The school should continue to be based on knowledge, should be demanding, but should be more practical, friendly and interesting from the point of view of practical activities,” she said.
Teacher Support and New Thematic Modules
One of the main goals is to facilitate and streamline the daily work of teachers. As part of the education reform, educators will have access to coherent core curricula, methodological guides and tools to monitor student progress.
The Vice-Minister announced that children and young people will learn in an interesting and effective way. Parents will receive specific information about what, for what purpose and in what way the school teaches. For example, thematic modules such as media education will be introduced, which will be implemented in Polish language, civic education and IT classes.
New Examination Rules and Reform Implementation Schedule
The first examinations according to the new core curricula will be organized between 2031/2032. “There is time to adapt and to calmly implement the changes,” the Deputy Minister said.
Maciej Jakubowski (IBE) assessed that the reform is based on an in-depth, accurate diagnosis of what the Polish school needs. He added that this is the first change prepared on the basis of consultations with teachers, in which nearly 30,000 teachers participated. “We have created foundations that are realistic, that will not ‘chase’ the material. They will leave room for teachers to deepen knowledge, to build creativity and to teach problem-solving,” he said.
The change in the core curriculum of preschool education and general education is planned to be implemented, starting from the 2026/2027 school year in preschools and in grades I and IV of primary schools, and from the 2027/2028 school year in grade I of secondary schools.
The reform also provides for changes in pedagogical supervision, including the abolition of the obligation for the school superintendent to issue opinions on organizational plans of public schools, an increase in the fee for textbook approval, and an increase in the textbook subsidy amount.
