A Polish court sentenced a woman to 6.5 years for failing to aid a child sexually abused by her husband, sparking a political controversy and accusations of a smear campaign.
Conviction and Initial Reports
On March 19th, the District Court in Świdnica sentenced Kamila L., 41, to 6.5 years in prison for failing to assist a minor experiencing sexual abuse. She was also convicted of animal abuse—witnessing acts of zoophilia committed by her husband.
Her husband had previously been sentenced to 25 years in prison for these and other crimes, including zoophilia.
Political Fallout and Allegations of a Smear Campaign
Reports surfaced regarding the convicted woman’s past membership in the Civic Platform party. Social media posts circulated, including photos of her with Monika Wielichowska, a deputy marshal of the Sejm and a Civic Platform politician from Kłodzko County.
Wielichowska responded on Thursday with a statement distancing herself from the acquaintance, stating the photos were primarily taken during election campaigns.
Wielichowska’s Denial of Contact
“A mass campaign of hatred,” Wielichowska stated, asserting she had no private or professional contact with the convicted woman. She emphasized the woman was never an assistant, employee, or collaborator in her parliamentary office.
Wielichowska further clarified that the individual ceased party membership over two years ago upon learning of the allegations.
Accusations Against PiS and Right-Wing Media
Wielichowska accused PiS (Law and Justice party) and right-wing media of orchestrating a “mass campaign of hatred” based on lies and defamation. She believes the goal was to create the impression that she aided individuals accused and convicted of pedophilia.
She strongly condemned the exploitation of child tragedy for political gain, stating it is harmful and can exacerbate the suffering of victims.
Emphasis on Justice and Severity of Crimes
Wielichowska underscored that every crime, especially those as horrific as sexual abuse, must be punished. She affirmed her support for severe and appropriate penalties for all offenses, as demonstrated in this case.
Prosecutor’s Comments and Ongoing Review
National Prosecutor Dariusz Korneluk stated on Monday that the Kłodzko pedophilia case was unsuitable for public comment due to the graphic nature of the allegations. He assured that no one attempted to interfere with the investigation.
The prosecutor requested justification for both rulings and will decide whether to appeal after reviewing them, noting they initially sought a significantly longer sentence for the woman.
Minister of Justice’s Analysis
Minister of Justice and Prosecutor General Waldemar Żurek announced on Wednesday that he was analyzing documents related to the case, focusing on the woman’s role and the disparity between the requested and imposed sentences. He acknowledged the “enormous nightmare” of the case.
Political Reactions and Accusations of Silence
Prime Minister Donald Tusk addressed the matter in the Sejm, condemning any attempt to politically exploit the crime of pedophilia as a “scandal.” He affirmed that anyone harming a child would be relentlessly prosecuted.
A meeting of the Parliamentary Group for Counteracting Lawlessness, composed of PiS MPs, was held last week. MP Michał Woś commented on a potential “conspiracy of silence,” particularly concerning the role of Monika Wielichowska in Kłodzko.
Details of the Abuse Case
The 41-year-old woman was convicted for failing to help a minor victimized by her husband’s sexual abuse between 2011 and 2022. She was also aware of acts of zoophilia committed by her husband, leading to the animal abuse charge.
Husband’s Sentence and Charges
The woman’s husband, 45, received a preliminary sentence of 25 years in prison, facing charges including rape, administering drugs to victims, possessing and distributing pornography, and animal abuse. He was accused of sexually abusing children under 15 and animals.
