Polish MP Displays Swastika-Altered Israeli Flag in Parliament, Faces Investigation

A Polish MP sparked outrage and a legal inquiry after displaying a modified Israeli flag featuring a swastika during a parliamentary session on Tuesday.

Investigation Launched into MP’s Actions

Prosecutors will investigate whether MP Berkowicz’s actions constitute public defamation of a foreign flag on Polish territory and insult towards a group or individual based on national, ethnic, racial, or religious affiliation.

Berkowicz’s Remarks and Flag Display

The incident occurred during the opening of Tuesday’s Sejm (Parliament) session, following a formal motion by the MP. Berkowicz accused Israel of using banned phosphorus bombs, causing civilian casualties, including women and children.

He stated, “Israel is committing genocide with particular cruelty; Israel is the new Third Reich,” before unveiling the altered Israeli flag with a swastika replacing the Star of David, asserting that is how the flag should appear.

Parliamentary Condemnation and Complaint

Sejm Marshal Włodzimierz Czarzasty filed a complaint alleging public defamation of a foreign flag and promotion of fascism. Czarzasty emphasized the gravity of the act, particularly given it occurred on International Holocaust Remembrance Day.

The complaint included excerpts from the Sejm’s transcript and a recording of Berkowicz’s statement, highlighting the “insult to the flag of a country with which Poland maintains diplomatic relations, a country that has experienced the dramatic events of the Holocaust.”

Further Sanctions and MP’s Response

The Sejm Chancellery announced it would seek financial penalties against Berkowicz for violating the dignity of the Parliament, citing relevant regulations. Berkowicz responded on X (formerly Twitter), stating he “did what needed to be done” and was prepared to face the consequences.
