Polish MP Displays Swastika-Altered Israeli Flag in Parliament

A Polish lawmaker sparked outrage and a legal investigation by presenting a doctored Israeli flag featuring a swastika during a parliamentary session on Tuesday.

Investigation Launched into MP’s Actions

Prosecutors will investigate whether MP Berkowicz’s actions constitute public defamation of a foreign flag on Polish territory and insult towards a group or individual based on national, ethnic, racial, or religious affiliation.

The case stems from Berkowicz’s address during the opening of Tuesday’s Sejm session, delivered as part of a formal motion.

Accusations Against Israel and Flag Display

Berkowicz accused Israel of conducting attacks using banned white phosphorus bombs, alleging civilian casualties, including children and women. He stated, “Israel is committing genocide with particular cruelty; Israel is the new Third Reich.”

He then displayed a printed image of the altered Israeli flag, replacing the Star of David with a swastika, asserting that this is how the Israeli flag should appear.

Sejm Speaker Files Complaint

Sejm Speaker Włodzimierz Czarzasty filed a complaint alleging public defamation of a foreign flag and promotion of fascism.

Czarzasty stated the act “insulted the flag of a country with which Poland maintains diplomatic relations, a country particularly marked by the dramatic events of the Holocaust.” He added the timing during the Day of Remembrance of the Holocaust was especially offensive.

Sanctions and MP’s Response

The Sejm Chancellery announced it would seek financial penalties against Berkowicz for violating the dignity of the Sejm, citing relevant regulations. Berkowicz responded on X, stating he “did what needed to be done and is ready to pay the price.”

Evidence submitted with the complaint includes excerpts from the Sejm session transcript and a recording of the MP’s statement.
