Polish MP Litewka’s Death: Suspect Granted Conditional Release, Prosecution to Appeal

A 57-year-old man detained in connection with the death of Polish MP Łukasz Litewka has been granted conditional release on bail, prompting an appeal from prosecutors.

MP Litewka’s Death and Initial Arrest

On Thursday, April 23rd, a tragic accident resulted in the death of MP Łukasz Litewka. A 57-year-old resident of Sosnowiec, driving a Mitsubishi Colt, allegedly crossed into the opposite lane and collided with the MP, who was riding a bicycle. Despite resuscitation efforts, Litewka died at the scene.

The driver of the Mitsubishi was arrested and charged with causing a traffic accident resulting in death, a crime punishable by six months to eight years imprisonment. Prosecutors allege the driver negligently violated traffic regulations, leading to the MP’s death.

Conditional Release and Prosecution Appeal

The District Court in Dąbrowa Górnicza initially ordered a three-month detention for the suspect. However, the court stipulated he could be released if he posts bail of 40,000 PLN within 14 days. Upon release on bail, the suspect would be subject to police supervision and a travel ban.

The prosecution has announced it will appeal the court’s decision regarding the bail condition. Prosecutor Bartosz Kilian of the Sosnowiec District Prosecutor’s Office stated they will strive to have the appeal filed with the court as soon as possible, arguing that only continued detention will adequately protect the integrity of the proceedings.

Suspect’s Account and Investigation

The suspect confessed to the charges but attributed the incident to a loss of consciousness, momentary distraction, or complete memory loss regarding the accident. Prosecutors view these explanations with skepticism, suggesting they may be a defense strategy, and note inconsistencies in the suspect’s statements.

Investigators justified the arrest request citing the severity of the potential sentence and concerns about potential obstruction of justice.

Łukasz Litewka’s Legacy

Łukasz Litewka was known for his charitable and community work. His foundation, TeamLitewka, actively supported children’s medical treatments, animal welfare, and provided assistance to the local community, raising funds for rehabilitation equipment and aid for accident victims.

During the 2023 parliamentary election campaign, Litewka featured images of adoptable dogs from a local shelter on his campaign posters, including their names and contact information. After the campaign, these banners were repurposed as insulation material for the shelter’s kennels.

Funeral Arrangements

The funeral of MP Łukasz Litewka will be held next Wednesday in Sosnowiec.
