Polish MP Mejza to Face Speeding Charges After Waiving Immunity

A Polish parliamentary committee has formally approved the waiver of immunity for MP Łukasz Mejza, clearing the way for prosecution over reckless driving offenses.

Immunity Waiver Processed

The Sejm’s committee addressed two submissions received last week, in which Łukasz Mejza relinquished his parliamentary immunity concerning traffic violations. The Sejm Marshal forwarded the declarations to the relevant committees for formal review.

Committee Chairman Jarosław Urbaniak noted that the PiS MP did not attend the session, and no discussion took place regarding the matter.

Formal Correctness Confirmed

The committee found no objections to the waiver. The Bureau for Expert Analysis and Regulatory Impact Assessment deemed Mejza’s declarations formally correct. With no opposition, the committee confirmed the documents were properly submitted.

Details of the Offenses

Mejza faces charges related to driving 200 km/h on the S3 expressway and nine additional traffic violations registered by speed cameras. The National Police Chief and the Main Inspectorate of Road Transport are pursuing the case.

In October, Mejza was stopped on the S3 near Polkowice, Lower Silesia, exceeding the 120 km/h speed limit. Police intended to issue a fine of 2,500 złoty and 15 penalty points, but Mejza invoked his immunity.

The Main Inspectorate of Road Transport seeks to hold him accountable for nine speeding offenses recorded by cameras, potentially resulting in 163 penalty points and fines totaling up to 17,800 złoty.

Mejza’s Apology and Pledge

Mejza previously announced his intention to waive immunity regarding the S3 speeding incident, pledging to pay the fine and donate an equivalent amount to support victims of road accidents.

He stated, “As promised, I immediately waive my immunity in the matter of speeding on the S3. I regret what I did, and such a situation will not happen again. I apologize once again.”

The Sejm Chancellery clarified that an MP cannot independently notify the Sejm Marshal of an immunity waiver until a formal request is submitted to the Sejm.
