Polish MP Mejza Waives Immunity Over Speeding Violations

Polish MP Łukasz Mejza has waived his parliamentary immunity in connection with multiple speeding offenses, including reaching 200 km/h.

MP Mejza Relinquishes Immunity

Two letters from PiS MP Łukasz Mejza were submitted to the Sejm, in which he waived immunity related to repeated speeding on public roads, according to the Sejm Chancellery.

The Sejm’s regulatory committee will address Mejza’s statements this coming Wednesday.

Incident on the S3 Expressway

The case stems from an incident on October 13th of last year, when Łukasz Mejza was stopped by police on the S3 expressway near Polkowice, Lower Silesia.

The MP significantly exceeded the speed limit, traveling at 200 km/h in a 120 km/h zone.

Initial Fine and Immunity Claim

Police initially intended to issue a fine of 2,500 zł and 15 penalty points. Mejza refused to accept the ticket, citing parliamentary immunity.

The case was then escalated, with a request to waive immunity sent from the Lower Silesian police command to the National Police Headquarters, and subsequently to the Speaker of the Sejm through the Prosecutor General.

Multiple Speeding Allegations

Radio RMF FM reports that the case may be broader in scope. Police intend to fine Mejza not only for the S3 incident but for a total of 10 speeding offenses.

Nine of these were registered by speed cameras.

Series of Violations and Formal Procedure

This indicates that the MP’s case is not limited to a single incident but may involve a series of traffic law violations, necessitating the formal initiation of immunity procedures.

Previous Statement and Pledge

As early as last October, Mejza announced his intention to waive immunity in the speeding case.

He also pledged to pay the fine and donate an equivalent amount to victims of road accidents.

Mejza’s Apology

“As I promised, I immediately waive my immunity in the speeding case on the S3. I regret what I did, and such a situation will not happen again. I apologize once again,” the MP stated at the time.

Sejm Chancellery Clarification

The Sejm Chancellery clarified that the MP’s independent statement has no legal force until a formal request is received by the Speaker of the Sejm.

Explanation for Not Accepting Fine

In a previous statement, Mejza explained that he did not accept the fine because he was rushing to the airport and feared that the formalities associated with issuing it would cause him to miss his flight.
