Lawmaker Paweł Kowal suggests nominating Polish humanitarian helpers for Nobel Peace Prize amid Trump controversy.
Dispute Over Nobel for Donald Trump
Paweł Kowal’s statement came on TVN24. The MP was asked about the conflict between Sejm Marshal Włodzimierz Czarzasty and US Ambassador Tom Rose. Marshal Czarzasty publicly announced that he would not support a proposal to award the US president the Nobel Peace Prize, believing Trump does not deserve such recognition. The reaction was immediate. US Ambassador to Poland Tom Rose announced breaking off contacts with the Sejm Marshal, accusing him of offensive remarks against the American leader.
Nobel Belongs to Poles, Says Kowal
MP Paweł Kowal assessed that the essence of the matter is not Trump himself, but the question of who and for what should receive the Nobel Peace Prize. In his opinion, Poland now has strong arguments to launch its own initiative.
“My opinion is that the Polish parliament should step forward and support awarding the Nobel Prize to Poles who saved Ukrainians in their hour of need after 2022. It was a true humanitarian uprising,” said the chairman of the Council for Cooperation with Ukraine.
“Nothing Like This Has Happened Anywhere in the World”
Kowal emphasized the scale and uniqueness of the aid provided to war refugees from Ukraine. He pointed out that millions of people found shelter not in camps or temporary facilities, but in private homes.
“I say this with the seriousness with which I speak about no other matter. Nowhere in the world has there been such a scale of accepting refugees – in homes, under their own roof, in their own room, in their own bedroom, in their own kitchen,” noted the politician. As an example of continuing support for Ukraine, he mentioned, among other things, the transfer of over a thousand electricity generators.
Report and Nobel Prize Efforts
Paweł Kowal announced that he would seek to formalize the initiative. As he recalled, the Council for Cooperation with Ukraine, established by the prime minister, has prepared a detailed report documenting the scale of Polish aid.
He emphasized that it contains “hard data” showing that Poles provided disinterested support to a greater extent than anyone else in the world. “This cannot be forgotten,” emphasized the KO MP. His initiative will have to wait until the next Nobel season – the deadline for nominations for the peace prize passed on January 31.
