Polish MP Waives Immunity, Faces 163 Demerit Points for Speeding

Łukasz Mejza has relinquished his parliamentary immunity, potentially facing substantial fines and demerit points for multiple speeding offenses in Poland.

MP Mejza Waives Immunity

Letters from Łukasz Mejza requesting a waiver of immunity were received by the Sejm (Polish Parliament) on March 19th and were immediately forwarded to the Committee on Regulations, Deputies’ Affairs and Immunity. Parliamentarians will convene this Wednesday to formally advise the Speaker of the Sejm on the validity of Mejza’s consent to be held accountable for traffic violations.

Speeding Incident and Initial Response

On October 13th of last year, Mejza was stopped on the S3 expressway near Polkowice, Lower Silesia, for exceeding the speed limit by nearly double – traveling at 200 km/h in a 120 km/h zone. Police intended to issue a fine of 2,500 złoty and 15 demerit points, but the MP invoked his immunity and refused the ticket. Consequently, police requested a lifting of his immunity, initiating a process through the Lower Silesian Police Command to the National Police Headquarters (KGP), and then via the Prosecutor General to the Speaker of the Sejm.

Multiple Speeding Allegations and Potential Penalties

RMF FM radio, which first reported Mejza’s waiver of immunity, stated that police intend to fine the MP for a total of ten speeding incidents. In addition to the S3 violation, nine further offenses were registered by speed cameras. The total accumulated demerit points could reach 163, with potential fines totaling 17,800 złoty.

Previous Apology and Commitment

In mid-October of last year, Mejza announced his intention to waive immunity regarding the S3 speeding incident. He pledged to pay the 2,500 złoty fine and donate an equivalent amount to a cause supporting victims of road accidents. Mejza stated, “As promised, I immediately waive my immunity in the matter of speeding on the S3. I regret what I did, and such a situation will not happen again. I apologize once again.”

Procedural Requirements for Immunity Waiver

The Sejm Chancellery clarified that an MP cannot independently notify the Speaker of the Sejm regarding a waiver of immunity until a formal request is received. In his initial statement last October, Mejza explained he declined the police ticket because he was rushing to the airport and feared the time required to process it would cause him to miss his flight.

Mejza’s Defense and Counter-Accusations

Mejza stated, “These are some old, accumulated cases from 2024. If the correspondence hadn’t been sent to my old address, I would have accepted these tickets two years ago and wouldn’t have any demerit points.” He added that while he exceeded the speed limit on an expressway, Donald Tusk did so in a built-up area, suggesting Tusk should be scrutinized first.

Controversial Conduct in Parliament

The MP is known for his attacks on others, but his activity in the Sejm X term is not highly rated. He is far from the forefront of the most active parliamentarians in terms of the number of interpellations submitted, and his speeches mainly consist of parliamentary statements, usually delivered at the end of the day’s session to a nearly empty hall.

History of Aggressive Tactics

Mejza is known for introducing a confrontational style to the Sejm. He has repeatedly used offensive terms towards the Prime Minister and members of the Civic Platform (PO) party. In September 2025, he allegedly attacked Senator Wadim Tyszkiewicz and his wife using vulgar language, resulting in the highest possible penalty from the Committee on Parliamentary Ethics – a reprimand. Previously, Mejza sent pre-trial letters to the parents of sick children who criticized his business activities involving unproven therapies, and he also sued a seventeen-year-old high school student for social media posts.
