Polish Parliament Investigates Alleged Russian Mafia Ties to Crypto Exchange Zondacrypto

Poland’s parliament is probing potential links between the Zondacrypto cryptocurrency exchange, Russian mafia groups, and political financing, raising concerns about national security.

Zondacrypto Scandal Sparks Legislative Action

Parliament Speaker Włodzimierz Czarzasty stated the Zondacrypto case is “very serious” and necessitates new legislation to regulate cryptocurrencies, citing both EU requirements and citizen safety.

Czarzasty emphasized the need to investigate why the cryptocurrency bill was twice vetoed by the President and whether Russian mafia involvement was known to President Nawrocki, PiS politicians, or Konfederacja members.

Questions of Political Funding and Influence

Concerns are mounting regarding which politicians received funding from Zondacrypto, the nature of those funds, and whether changes to the cryptocurrency legislation were influenced by the firm.

Czarzasty questioned whether Zondacrypto financed events attended by Karol Nawrocki, and if the firm secured protection through right-wing politicians, deeming the entire situation “very suspicious.”

Allegations of Bribery and Russian Connections

Czarzasty called for investigation into potential bribes, account numbers used for transfers, and the connections between PiS and Konfederacja politicians and the Russian mafia.

President Nawrocki Denies Wrongdoing

President Karol Nawrocki asserted that the first communication from the Internal Security Agency regarding the cryptocurrency market arrived at the Presidential Chancellery on December 12, 2025 – eleven days after his veto of the crypto asset law and seven days after a secret parliamentary session.

Nawrocki accused the government of using lies to cover up its incompetence in controlling the cryptocurrency market and urged them to take responsibility.

Zondacrypto’s Financial Troubles and Investigation

Media reports in early April revealed a 99% drop in Zondacrypto’s Bitcoin reserves and user complaints about withdrawal issues, indicating potential liquidity problems.

The Katowice Regional Prosecutor’s Office launched an investigation on April 17th into potential fraud against Zondacrypto clients and money laundering, estimating damages at over 350 million złoty and rising, with reports indicating that Zondacrypto’s CEO, Przemysław Kral, has left for Israel.

Russian Mafia Allegedly Controls Zondacrypto

According to “Gazeta Wyborcza,” Polish intelligence services believe the Tambov mafia, a notorious Russian criminal group linked to Vladimir Putin’s allies, gained control of Zondacrypto (formerly BitBay) in July 2018.

Tusk Accuses Zondacrypto of Funding Political Forces

Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated that Zondacrypto’s “great career” began in 2022 with a new CEO and funding from the Russian mafia.

Tusk alleged that Zondacrypto sponsored political and social events in Poland, including the CPAC event in Rzeszów, which featured President Nawrocki and former President Andrzej Duda, and provided 450,000 złoty to Zbigniew Ziobro’s Institute of Polish Sovereignty and 70,000 euros to a company linked to Konfederacja MP Przemysław Wipler.
