Parliamentary Clubs to Seek Tribunal for Ziobro
Leaders of parliamentary clubs will submit a motion to the Sejm’s Commission on Constitutional Responsibility for a State Tribunal against Zbigniew Ziobro, announced Włodzimierz Czarzasty on Tuesday, April 14th, during a press conference.
All leaders of the coalition clubs have signed the joint motion.
Sejm Speaker on Potential Criminality
Responding to journalists’ questions, the Sejm Speaker stated, “Potential bandits, criminals, and thieves should be tried in Poland.” He added that the concerns of PiS are no longer relevant, stating, “We understand defending colleagues within PiS, but defending potential criminals, thieves, and bandits is your affair, not ours.”
Hungarian Election Results and Polish Support
Czarzasty hailed the outcome of the Hungarian elections as a “beautiful triumph of democracy,” congratulating the victors and Hungary.
He expressed Poland’s readiness to assist the new Hungarian team, offering their experience in overcoming the “darkness of the PiS system’s lawlessness.” The Polish Sejm is prepared for close cooperation with the Hungarian parliament.
Ziobro Faces Multiple Tribunal-Worthy Offenses
Czarzasty stated that the allegations against Ziobro are “sufficient for 10 State Tribunals.”
Timing Linked to Hungarian Election Outcome
Czarzasty indicated a renewed sense of urgency regarding the State Tribunal motion for Ziobro in light of the events in Hungary.
He noted the constitutional majority for TISZA Péter Magyar and the possibility of swiftly changing laws, adding that the matter should be referred to the appropriate committee within the Sejm.
PiS Response to Orbán’s Defeat
Following Viktor Orbán’s electoral defeat, the Law and Justice (PiS) party is reportedly seeking a new narrative, with speculation that they overextended support for the Hungarian Prime Minister but now see an opportunity in his loss.
Investigation into Ziobro’s Conduct
Investigators accuse Zbigniew Ziobro, while serving as Minister of Justice under the PiS government, of leading an organized criminal group and abusing his position for criminal activities.
Allegations of Criminal Activity
Prosecutors allege Ziobro may have committed 26 offenses, including issuing unlawful orders to subordinates to secure grants from the Justice Fund for selected entities, interfering with tender offers, and allowing ineligible entities to receive funds.
Ziobro’s Pre-Election Remarks on Hungary
Zbigniew Ziobro stated on April 11th that Hungarian voters, aware of the consequences of a change in power to pro-EU Donald Tusk in Poland, would not be swayed by “EU specifics” in their pockets.
He emphasized the high stakes of the Hungarian elections, warning that a victory for Péter Magyar would open the way for Brussels to restructure the EU into a centralized state, a plan Orbán had pledged to block.
