A 71-year-old man died in a hospital after police intervened at his home in Leśnica, Wrocław, following a violent episode.
Police Respond to Domestic Disturbance
Police were called to a residence in Leśnica, near Wrocław, on Monday morning after a 71-year-old man refused to take his medication and began destroying property. His wife had alerted authorities.
Upon arrival, officers found the man outside the building.
Escalation and Use of Force
According to Wrocław police, the man was initially calm but became aggressive when informed emergency medical services had been summoned. He began to assault officers, resisting both actively and passively.
Police used the minimum level of force necessary, initially physical restraint, but it proved ineffective. Officers were forced to the ground during the struggle.
Continued Aggression and Medical Emergency
After deploying pepper spray and handcuffing the man, he briefly calmed down while awaiting an ambulance. He began speaking with officers, and the situation appeared stable.
However, approximately ten minutes later, he began to weaken and suffered cardiac arrest.
Hospitalization and Investigation
Officers administered CPR until the ambulance arrived. The 71-year-old man died in the hospital. A post-mortem examination has been ordered by the prosecutor’s office.
Internal Review and Lack of Body Cameras
Wrocław police stated that internal control units are conducting a review of the incident, independent of the prosecutor’s investigation. Preliminary findings indicate no procedural errors.
Police spokesperson Wojciech Jabłoński confirmed that the officers involved were not equipped with body cameras to record the intervention.
