Polish authorities have issued an arrest warrant for Szymon Lubiński, a lawyer whose mother previously served as finance minister, after he failed to appear in court.
Arrest Warrant Issued for Szymon Lubiński
An arrest warrant for Szymon Lubiński was published on the police website on March 20th. The case gained attention because the lawyer’s mother was the Minister of Finance in the first PiS government, and the man presented himself as a victim of a conspiracy during the proceedings.
Failure to Appear in Court
The lawyer was supposed to appear at a correctional facility at the end of January. When he did not, police attempted to locate him. After failing to do so, the arrest warrant was issued. Individuals with information regarding Lubiński’s whereabouts are urged to contact the Szczecin-Pogodno Police Station.
Charges Against Szymon Lubiński
Lubiński was convicted of several crimes, including fraud and accepting bribes. Investigations revealed that the lawyer accepted money from clients in exchange for promises of favorable court outcomes, falsely claiming influence within the police and prosecutor’s office.
Extortion Charges
The main charge relates to the extortion of 30,000 złoty from a client involved in a car accident. Investigators allege Lubiński offered to help the woman regain her driver’s license, which had been revoked by the police, with the assistance of a former police officer, Marek Z.
Alleged Bribery Attempts
Prosecutors claim Lubiński also demanded 100,000 złoty from the same client to secure the dismissal of her case, citing his alleged influence within the prosecutor’s office. The woman recorded the conversation and reported the incident to investigators.
Additional Charges: Dealing in Stolen Goods and False Testimony
Other charges included dealing in stolen goods, providing false testimony, and obstructing legal proceedings. Lubiński was accused of removing a gangster, Wiesław J. “Pick,”’s contraband from the detention center. The lawyer denied the charges.
Sentencing and Appeal
The court of first instance sentenced Lubiński to a total of seven years in prison. The Regional Court in Szczecin upheld the verdict, reducing the sentences for individual offenses and acquitting the lawyer of one charge related to providing false testimony. A final sentence of four years imprisonment was imposed.
