Polish Police Search for Father After Infant Dies with Signs of Abuse

A five-month-old boy in Poznań, Poland, died from injuries consistent with prolonged abuse, prompting a search for his father and the arrest of three others.

Infant Hospitalized with Severe Injuries

The boy was admitted to the hospital on the night of Thursday, November 23rd. Doctors at the Wielkopolska Center for Pediatrics initially assessed his condition as serious but stable.

He suffered numerous bruises and a fractured skull, leading doctors to believe he had been a victim of abuse for an extended period.

Deteriorating Condition and Death

The infant underwent a head operation on Friday, but his condition worsened overnight. He was transferred to intensive care and underwent another procedure.

Despite medical efforts, the boy died on Wednesday, according to police spokesperson Andrzej Borowiak.

Three Arrested, Facing Charges

Police in Poznań-Nowe Miasto arrested the 40-year-old mother, a citizen of Georgia, and two Moldovan citizens, aged 21 and 25, last week.

They are accused of endangering the child’s health, an offense punishable by up to 15 years in prison. The court granted a temporary arrest warrant for all three.

Mother’s Trip and Discovery of Injuries

Police investigations revealed the mother traveled to Moldova for a planned medical procedure, leaving the baby in the care of the father and two Moldovan acquaintances.

Upon her return to Poland, she found the infant in critical condition and took him to the hospital.

Father Remains at Large

Łukasz Paterski of the Poznań City Police confirmed that the child’s father is currently wanted.

The search began shortly after the boy was hospitalized. Prosecutors have not yet indicated whether charges will be amended following the child’s death.
