Polish President Cancels Budapest Visit, Skips Meeting with Orban

Polish President Karol Nawrocki cancels his Budapest visit, deferring a meeting with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban to a Visegrád Group summit, citing national interest.

Spokesman Explains President’s Decision

On TVN24, spokesman Rafał Leśkiewicz explained that President Nawrocki had scheduled a Visegrád Group summit with the presidents of the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary as the main purpose of his trip to Hungary. He added that a separate meeting with the Hungarian president and prime minister was planned for the second day.

Given that Prime Minister Orban was set to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday to discuss energy, cooperation and sanctions, President Nawrocki decided to cancel the visit and will not meet Orban, limiting the trip to a one‑day Visegrád summit.

Leśkiewicz: It Is Poland’s National Interest

Leśkiewicz said that negotiations to end the war in Ukraine were entering a decisive phase. He noted that the President’s policy follows the legacy of former President Lech Kaczyński, who stressed that Europe’s security depends on solidarity, especially in energy.

Because Orban’s meeting with Putin would involve energy and sanctions discussions, the president chose not to meet Orban and shortened the trip to a single-day Visegrád summit. He emphasized that resolving the conflict in Ukraine is a key concern reflecting Poland’s national interest.

Karol Nawrocki Was to Meet Orban but Cancelled the Meeting

On Wednesday, December 3, President Nawrocki travelled to Hungary to attend the Visegrád Group summit in Ostrów. He intended to accompany the following day with his wife to Budapest for official visits and meetings with the Hungarian government.

However, the visit was canceled. According to Chief of the International Policy Office Marcin Przydacz, the decision reflects the legacy of former President Kaczyński and aims at focusing on real ways to end the war in Ukraine.
