Polish President Defends Crypto Act Veto, Blames Government for Zondacrypto Losses

President Karol Nawrocki is defending his veto of a crypto asset law, asserting the government is responsible for potential losses suffered by approximately 30,000 investors in the Zondacrypto exchange.

President Stands Firm on Crypto Veto

President Karol Nawrocki stated on Friday he does not regret vetoing the crypto asset law, and holds the government of Donald Tusk responsible for the situation affecting around 30,000 individuals potentially harmed by the Zondacrypto exchange issue.

Delayed EU Regulation Implementation Criticized

The Polish government had 11 months to implement the European Union’s MiCA regulation (Markets in Crypto-Assets). President Nawrocki criticized the government for addressing the matter only at the last moment, stating the Prime Minister appears unaware that Polish authorities could have intervened during the 11-month period Zondacrypto was operating.

Sejm Fails to Override Presidential Veto

The Sejm (Polish Parliament) again failed to override the President’s veto on the crypto asset law on Friday. This marked the second attempt by the Sejm to reject President Nawrocki’s veto. The initial veto occurred in early December of last year, and was not overridden during a subsequent vote in December 2025. The government then resubmitted the same bill, which was again vetoed by the President in February of this year.

The only difference between the two versions of the bill was the maximum fee rate for KNF (Polish Financial Supervision Authority) oversight of the market.

President Claims Government Could Have Warned Investors

President Nawrocki asserted that the government could have mitigated the issue by warning investors. He stated he received information from Polish intelligence services regarding Zondacrypto *after* issuing his first veto, meaning he was initially unaware of the situation.

Responsibility Lies with Tusk’s Government

“I did not regret this veto for a second. Those responsible for these 30,000 people, who today remain in a certain crisis, or with a certain problem, are responsible to the government of Donald Tusk and the Prime Minister knows this perfectly well,” the President stated.
