Polish President Karol Nawrocki staunchly defended his veto of a crypto asset law, alleging the government possessed prior knowledge of issues surrounding Zondacrypto and deliberately limited his access to information.
President Nawrocki Stands Firm on Veto
Karol Nawrocki stated he does not regret vetoing the crypto asset law, asserting that the proposed legislation would not have addressed the current problems faced by approximately 30,000 individuals affected by issues with Zondacrypto, as highlighted by Prime Minister Donald Tusk.
Nawrocki claimed he only received information regarding Zondacrypto from Polish intelligence agencies *after* issuing his initial veto, suggesting a deliberate attempt to keep him in the dark.
Government Had Ample Time to Act
According to Nawrocki, the Polish government had eleven months to implement European Union regulations and resolve the Zondacrypto situation through the National Revenue Administration, the prosecutor’s office, and other relevant agencies.
He emphasized that receiving the information only after the veto further demonstrates the government’s approach to the matter, stating he was “cut off from information” regarding the unfolding events.
Law Was a “Overregulation”
The President argued that the law proposed by the government would not have impacted the current problems with Zondacrypto, characterizing the proposed legislation as “overregulation.”
President Proposes Alternative Solutions
Nawrocki criticized the government’s approach as an attempt to eliminate the entire cryptocurrency market in Poland, including legitimate operators, rather than protecting Polish citizens.
He stated that he, along with Donald Tusk’s coalition partners, identified necessary changes to the bill and proposed alternative solutions.
Political Motivations Alleged
Nawrocki expressed his belief that the government’s actions are driven by political motivations rather than a genuine effort to regulate the cryptocurrency system and guarantee security for individuals.
No Ties to Zondacrypto
The President asserted he has no personal connection to Przemysław Kral, the head of Zondacrypto, and has never met him or any of his representatives.
He also stated he has no information suggesting Zondacrypto supported his election campaign, and that any connections between right-wing parties and the firm appeared to involve only “isolated individuals,” not a widespread pattern.
Concerns Over Information Flow
Nawrocki reiterated his concerns about the lack of transparency and cooperation between the government and the Presidential Palace, noting that he was shielded from crucial information, even as Prime Minister Tusk organized a secret parliamentary session.
He believes the Zondacrypto case highlights a weakness in the state’s ability to respond promptly to emerging threats, rather than a flaw in his veto decision.
