Polish President Meets with Hungarian Counterpart in Budapest

Polish President Karol Nawrocki met with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and President Tamás Sulyok in Budapest on Monday, during celebrations of Polish-Hungarian Friendship Day.

Polish-Hungarian Friendship Day Celebrations

Polish President Karol Nawrocki met with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán in Budapest on Monday, coinciding with the observance of Polish-Hungarian Friendship Day by both countries. President Nawrocki also held discussions with Hungarian President Tamás Sulyok.

Official celebrations for Polish-Hungarian Friendship Day took place in Przemyśl, Poland, with President Sulyok also in attendance.

Working Visit to Hungary

President Nawrocki traveled to Hungary for a working visit, according to his chancellery. Prior to his arrival in Budapest, he participated in the official Friendship Day celebrations in Przemyśl.

Meetings in Budapest

Upon arrival in Budapest, President Nawrocki was welcomed by President Sulyok. The two leaders engaged in a private conversation at the Sándor Palace, the Hungarian presidential residence.

Homage to Józef Bem

During his visit, President Nawrocki laid a wreath at the monument of General Józef Bem, a national hero for both Poland and Hungary.

Social Media Exchange

The Polish President also met with the Hungarian Prime Minister in Budapest. Orbán shared a photo of the meeting on X, stating, “Poles and Hungarians, two good friends. Welcome to Budapest, President Nawrocki.” The Polish President’s chancellery also posted a photo from the meeting.

Budapest Landmarks Illuminated

The Chain Bridge, a central landmark in Budapest, was illuminated with the national colors of Poland and Hungary on Monday as part of the Friendship Day celebrations. The celebrations alternate annually between Poland and Hungary; they were held in Kaposvár, Hungary, last year and in Stary Sącz, Poland, in 2024.

Historical Context of the Day of Friendship

The declaration establishing March 23rd as the Day of Friendship between the two nations was adopted on March 12, 2007, by the Hungarian Parliament. Shortly after, the Polish Sejm passed a similar resolution.
