Polish President Vetoes Crypto Regulation Amidst Alleged Lobbying and Funds Transfers

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk revealed alleged financial links between a crypto firm executive, a foundation linked to a former justice minister, and individuals facing legal charges, as a veto on crypto regulations looms.

Presidential Veto and EU Regulations

Karol Nawrocki, the Polish President, twice vetoed legislation implementing the EU’s MiCA (Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation) framework. The aim of the legislation was to enhance security for crypto asset issuance, trading, and related services, with oversight falling to the Financial Supervision Commission.

The Sejm (Polish Parliament) is scheduled to vote on overturning Nawrocki’s veto.

Tusk’s Accusations and Call for Vote

Prime Minister Donald Tusk addressed the issue on April 8th, stating that the situation surrounding the cryptocurrency market and client problems is becoming increasingly prominent. He urged the Sejm to swiftly reject the presidential veto, emphasizing the importance of implementing European regulations.

Tusk characterized the situation as involving “grim circumstances,” suggesting a connection between PiS politicians, the Confederation party, the presidential administration, lobbyists, and companies seeking an unregulated crypto market.

ABW Findings: Funds Transfers and Sponsorships

Tusk presented information received from the Internal Security Agency (ABW). According to the ABW, Przemysław Kral, CEO of Zondacrypto, transferred 450,000 PLN to the Zbigniew Ziobro’s “Instytut Polski Suwerennej” Foundation in October/November 2023, a month before the vote on the crypto regulation veto.

A portion of these funds was reportedly used for legal representation for Dariusz Matecki and Father Michał Olszewski. Additionally, a company associated with Kral transferred 70,000 EUR to Przemysław Wipler’s “Dobry Rząd” Foundation. Zondacrypto also served as a main sponsor of the CPAC Poland event during the recent presidential campaign.

Potential Political Fallout

Analysts suggest that the potential collapse of the Zondacrypto exchange could have political repercussions for President Nawrocki, the PiS party, the Confederation, and the President of the Polish Olympic Committee.

Appeal to Stakeholders

Tusk appealed to all involved in the cryptocurrency process to reconsider blocking state action and prioritizing the interests of a few companies over those of thousands of Polish citizens. He questioned the status of President Nawrocki’s promised bill to regulate the crypto market, noting that 100 days have passed since its announcement.
