Polish Prosecutors Probe Online Posts About Former PM Szydło’s Son

Polish prosecutors are probing seven Facebook posts that name former Catholic priest Tymoteusz Szydło, son of former Prime Minister Beata Szydło, saying the investigation remains active after years.

Ordination and First Mass

In May 2017, 25‑year‑old Tymoteusz Szydło, son of former Polish Prime Minister Beata Szydło, was ordained a Catholic priest. Despite never having been a public figure, the ceremony was promoted by the church with family involvement.

Crisis of Faith and Leave of Absence

In August 2019, after two years as a priest, he went on unscheduled leave, later admitting a “deep crisis of faith and calling” and expressing thoughts of leaving the priesthood. He requested the pope’s permission to return to secular life.

Alleged Online Posts and Media Rumors

Following the priest’s resignation, rumors surfaced that he had become a “children’s priest”, sparking speculation about private matters. A spokesperson denied the claim and threatened legal action against those spreading false statements.

Prosecutorial Investigation of Facebook Entries

Polish prosecutors examined seven photos posted on a single Facebook account that purportedly accused Tymoteusz of misconduct. The case was forwarded from the national prosecutor’s office to the Warsaw district prosecutor’s office. The investigation was paused in 2021 after the suspect was not found, but later resumed, including requests for witnesses in the United Kingdom.

Post‑Priesthood Activities and Business Ventures

After leaving the priesthood, Tymoteusz Szydło changed his surname and began working full‑time as a political consultant at ERG Bieruń‑Folie, a company linked to former oil magnate Daniel Obajtek. In October 2023, he reportedly founded a consultancy involving business management and energy sector firms.
