Polish Retiree-Pensioner ID 2026: Benefits, Discounts, and Upcoming Changes

The Polish government’s retiree-pensioner ID card offers significant benefits and discounts for seniors in 2026, with new security features coming next year.

Eligibility and Purpose

The retiree-pensioner ID card, also known as the retiree card, is issued by ZUS to individuals who have been granted the right to a pension, disability pension, or teacher’s compensation benefit. This document serves as official confirmation of retiree or pensioner status and entitles holders to numerous privileges, such as discounts and exemptions from fees. To use these benefits, the ID must be presented when requested by relevant institutions or controllers.

Card Formats: Physical and Digital

Since January 2023, the retiree-pensioner ID has been available in two forms: the traditional plastic card and a digital version called the mLegitymacja. The electronic document is issued automatically and can be activated through the mObywatel app on mobile devices. In 2026, the plastic card version is issued only upon request by the interested person, their legal guardian, or representative. Applications can be submitted to ZUS at any time – either simultaneously with applications for pension or disability pension, or after the right to benefits has been established.

Required Documents

To obtain a retiree-pensioner ID, the following documents must be submitted to ZUS. The most important function of the document is to provide access to medical care within the National Health Fund. Card holders can use doctor visits and specialist services without additional fees. The document also enables discounts on selected medications and spa stays, allowing seniors to more affordably access rehabilitation and treatment procedures.

Medical Benefits

In addition to medical benefits, the ID card provides other privileges, including discounts on various services in medical facilities, rehabilitation centers, and sports facilities. Card holders of the retiree-pensioner ID in 2026 can enjoy preferences related to RTV subscription fees. Exemption applies, among others, to persons who have reached 60 years of age and simultaneously receive a pension not exceeding 50% of average wages. To take advantage of the discount, it is necessary to present at Polish Post a document confirming the right to pension or disability pension and submit a relevant declaration.

Transportation Discounts

For those who have reached 75 years of age, exemption from fees occurs automatically – without the need to submit any documents or declarations. The discount becomes effective from the first day of the month following the 75th birthday. Seniors have the right to a number of statutory discounts, including discounts on public transportation. The “Senior Ticket” is available to all persons who have reached 60 years of age and provides a 30% discount on PKP Intercity train journeys, regardless of whether the person receives a pension or disability pension. Holders of the retiree-pensioner ID can use the statutory discount of 37%, but it is limited to a maximum of two journeys per year.

2026 Changes

The Social Insurance Institution is preparing to introduce a new design for the retiree-pensioner ID card, which will be valid from July 12, 2026. The new documents will be more secure due to lamination and modern security features, making them harder to counterfeit. The changes aim to adapt the document to growing security requirements, protect against forgeries, and increase the credibility of the ID card in daily use – in banks, pharmacies, or means of transport.

Retiree ID vs. Senior Card

It is worth remembering that the Senior Card and the retiree-pensioner ID are not the same thing. The retiree-pensioner ID is a document issued by ZUS to persons who have established the right to a pension, disability pension, or teacher’s compensation benefit. Its purpose is to confirm the right to benefits and enable the use of discounts, rebates, and exemptions (including RTV subscription fees or in public transport). This document can take the form of a traditional card or a digital mLegitymacja.
