Polish Streamer’s Cancer Fundraiser Exceeds $25 Million

A YouTube livestream fundraiser organized by Polish influencer Patryk “Łatwoganga” Garkowski for the CancerFighters Foundation surpassed 104 million złoty (over $25 million USD) on Sunday.

Influencer-Led Fundraiser Gains Momentum

Patryk “Łatwoganga” Garkowski’s fundraiser for the CancerFighters Foundation has been running on YouTube as a multi-day, uninterrupted livestream since April 17th. The initial goal of 500,000 złoty was quickly surpassed, with the total exceeding 104 million złoty as of Sunday and continuing to rise.

The campaign was sparked by the viral success of a rap song, “Ciągle tutaj jestem (diss na raka),” created by rapper Bedoes2115 and 11-year-old Maja Mecan, a CancerFighters Foundation beneficiary, which brought attention to childhood cancer.

Celebrity Participation and Symbolic Gestures

The streamer invited celebrities, artists, athletes, and influencers to participate in the livestream on his YouTube channel. Many joined online or visited Garkowski at his apartment in Warsaw. Participants included Doda, Robert Lewandowski, Adam Małysz, Cezary Pazura, and Roksana Węgiel.

Several stars, including Edyta Pazura, Katarzyna Nosowska, and Blanka Lipińska, shaved their heads during the stream in solidarity with children battling cancer.

Variety of Entertainment and Engagement

The livestream featured a diverse range of activities, including Małgorzata Kożuchowska recreating a scene from the TV series “M jak Miłość,” Cezary Pazura singing a song from “13 posterunku,” Tede and Peja reconciling after years of conflict, mini-concerts, a football table match commentary by Dariusz Szpakowski, and cooking demonstrations by Magda Gessler and Robert Makłowicz.

Expert Analysis: A New Generation of Philanthropy

Media scholar Prof. Kaczmarek-Śliwińska noted a shift in perception towards new media, stating that young people have mobilized not only their own generation but also older generations who recognize the positive impact of the campaign.

She compared the fundraiser to the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity (WOŚP), acknowledging WOŚP’s significant financial support but highlighting the lower costs associated with the livestream format.

Prof. Kaczmarek-Śliwińska suggested that Łatwoganga’s initiative could become “WOŚP of the new generation,” a streaming-based model preceded by online engagement and followed by financial contributions.

Positive Public Sentiment and Online Narrative

A report by Res Futura’s European Analytical Collective indicated that the online narrative surrounding the fundraiser is overwhelmingly positive, with 97% of comments expressing positive sentiment and 3% being critical or neutral.

The report highlighted the unprecedented level of consensus in Polish online discourse, with 96% of internet users expressing support for Łatwoganga and 82% rejecting criticisms of “charity washing” and tax optimization by influencers.

Res Futura attributed the fundraiser’s success to its representation of “value-based camps focused around grassroots digital society.”
