Polish Student Detained Over Planned Christmas Market Terror Plot

A 24‑year‑old student from the Catholic University of Lublin was detained in Szczecin on suspicion of plotting a mass bombing at a Christmas market, authorities said on Thursday.

Arrest in Szczecin over alleged Christmas market plot

The Internal Security Agency (ABW) arrested Mateusz W., a student at the Catholic University of Lublin, on Thursday during a routine check in Szczecin, according to a statement by the ministry’s spokesperson.

Evidence seized by ABW

During the operation, ABW officials seized documents detailing the plan for an explosive attack, as well as Islamic‑related materials. The seized items were stored for further investigation.

According to the spokesperson, the student had previously sought knowledge on how to produce explosives and was allegedly planning to join a terrorist organization to facilitate the planned attack.

Legal proceedings and custody

A court has sentenced the student to three months in custody pending trial. He will remain in detention until the end of the sentence.

Investigation oversight and scope

The investigation is conducted by the Szczecin ABW delegation under the supervision of the local National Prosecutor’s Office in Szczecin, and authorities describe the case as developmental.
