Polish tourist faces legal trouble after customs seized 5kg of coral reef fragments brought back from Seychelles vacation at Warsaw airport.
Seizure at Chopin Airport
A Polish tourist returning from holidays in the Seychelles was detained at Warsaw Chopin Airport after customs officials discovered nearly 5 kilograms of coral reef fragments in his luggage. The exotic vacation turned into a serious legal matter when authorities intervened.
CITES Convention Violation
The tourist claimed to have collected the fragments of coral skeletons during his vacation, bringing them back as a keepsake from the Seychelles. However, he lacked the required CITES documentation, which led to his arrest.
Potential Legal Consequences
According to Polish law, anyone who intentionally destroys, damages, moves, removes or takes wild plants, animals, fungi, their habitats, breeding grounds or natural habitats faces potential imprisonment, restriction of liberty or significant fines. The coral fragments have been seized as evidence in the criminal case.
Strict Wildlife Protection Laws
The National Revenue Administration (KAS) emphasizes Poland’s strict nature conservation laws, which carry severe penalties for environmental offenses. The tourist’s seemingly innocent souvenir could now lead to serious legal consequences under these provisions.
