Following a security assessment, Poland has relocated its military contingent from Iraq, coordinating with NATO allies as tensions escalate in the Middle East.
Polish Military Contingent Relocated from Iraq
The Polish Minister of National Defence (MON) announced the relocation of the Polish Military Contingent (PKW) from Iraq due to deteriorating security in the Middle East, following an analysis of operational conditions and potential threats.
The relocation process was conducted in coordination with NATO allies, with the operation coordinated by the Operational Command of the Armed Forces.
Prioritizing Soldier Safety
The Minister of National Defence emphasized that the priority was to ensure the maximum safety of soldiers and PKW personnel. Most personnel are already in Poland or en route, while some are stationed in Jordan, allowing for continued PKW operations in the region.
Operational Command Details Relocation
The Operational Command of the Armed Forces stated the relocation was a response to the changing security situation in the Middle East and ongoing operational analyses, aiming to limit risk and maintain the ability to carry out tasks.
Personnel Numbers and Deployment
Over one hundred Polish soldiers have arrived in or are traveling to Poland. Several dozen soldiers are being transported from Iraq to Jordan to continue their mission within the contingent.
NATO Cooperation and Monitoring
The operation was carried out in close cooperation with NATO allies, ensuring synchronized actions and continued fulfillment of mandated tasks. The situation remains under constant monitoring, with the safety of Polish soldiers as the highest priority.
Lebanese Contingent Remains
No similar decisions have been made regarding the Polish contingent in Lebanon, where approximately 200 soldiers are deployed as part of the UNIFIL mission. The security situation in that region is continuously monitored.
NATO Suspends Training Mission
NATO member states have decided to suspend the training mission in Iraq (NATO Mission Iraq, NMI) and evacuate approximately 600 soldiers due to the conflict in the Middle East, according to Spanish media reports.
Escalating Middle East Conflict
The conflict in the Middle East is in its 21st day, beginning with Israeli and US airstrikes on Iran, which retaliated with attacks on Israel and Arab states in the Persian Gulf, including US military bases and civilian infrastructure. Iran also blocked navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, halting oil exports from the Middle East.
