Pope Francis and Trump Clash Over Iran, Immigration

Growing tensions between Pope Francis and President Donald Trump stem from disagreements over the Iran conflict and US immigration policies, Axios reports.

Growing Friction Between Pope Francis and Trump

Increasing friction is emerging between Pope Francis and President Donald Trump, with the head of the Catholic Church sharply criticizing the US president’s actions.

Axios reports rising tensions between Donald Trump and Pope Francis, with the conflict rooted in the war with Iran and the president’s immigration policies. The report characterizes this as a confrontation between the moral authority of the Church and the political and military power of the United States.

First Open Confrontation in Decades

The tensions between Pope Francis and Trump represent the first such open confrontation between the Vatican and the White House in decades, according to the American portal.

Pope Francis Criticizes Trump’s Policies

Pope Francis delivered his most scathing opinion to date on the president’s policies, telling journalists that “attacks on civilian infrastructure are against international law and are a sign of hatred, division, and destruction.”

The Pope also addressed Trump’s threat to Iranian authorities that “the entire civilization will perish tonight” if they do not meet his demands.

“A threat was made against the entire Iranian nation. This is truly unacceptable,” the Pope emphasized.

US Catholic Church Supports Pope Francis

Dignitaries of the American Catholic Church have loudly supported Pope Francis’s critical stance towards Trump, despite typically being more conservative than the Vatican itself.

Cardinal Blase Cupich of Chicago stated that the Trump administration’s treatment of “a real war, with real victims and real suffering” as “a video game” is “repugnant.” Cardinal Robert McElroy of Washington publicly stated that war with Iran is contrary to Church teaching, as it does not meet the criterion of “just war.”

White House Denies Conflict with Vatican

The White House is attempting to deny reports of growing tensions between the president and Pope Francis, reminding that Catholics supported Trump in the 2024 elections. However, Axios notes that this support is demonstrably declining.

Pentagon Summons Vatican Envoy

The report also recalls that the Free Press portal recently reported that in January, the then-Apostolic Nuncio, Cardinal Christoph Pierre, was summoned to the Pentagon in response to Pope Francis’s speech to the diplomatic corps, in which the Pope warned that “the principle established after World War II, which forbade nations from using force to violate the borders of other states, has been completely undermined” and is being replaced by “diplomacy based on force.”

During this meeting, Deputy Pentagon Chief Elbridge Colby reportedly stated that “America has the military power to do whatever it wants in the world” and advised the Church to “stand on its side.” Another American official participating in the meeting allegedly “even went so far as to refer to the Avignon papacy,” the period in the 14th century when, under pressure from the King of France, the popes moved from Rome to Avignon and were dependent on the French crown.
