Poznań Court Sets Retrial in Murder of Journalist Jarosław Ziętara

On Dec. 2, the Poznań appellate court annulled a prior acquittal, restoring charges against Mirosław R. and Dariusz L. in the murder of journalist Jarosław Ziętara.

Appellate Court Decision

On Tuesday, December 2, the Poznań appellate court set aside the trial‑court ruling that had acquitted Mirosław R. and Dariusz L., who were charged with kidnapping, unlawful confinement and assisting in the murder of journalist Jarosław Ziętara. The appellate verdict is final and binding.

Reinstated Charges

The appellate court determined that the prosecution sought a new trial from the district court in 2022. With the acquittal annulled, the case will now be heard again from the beginning, bringing the accused back before the court.

Background of the Murder

In the early 1990s, journalist Jarosław Ziętara investigated the Poznań holding Elektromis. Mirosław R. and Dariusz L., employees of the firm, posed as police officers on 1 September 1992, lured the reporter into a vehicle resembling a police radio car, and handed him over to individuals who killed him, destroyed his body, and concealed the remains.

Previous Trial Outcome

The initial trial court had ruled the defendants innocent, a decision that was later contested by prosecutors who demanded a reevaluation by the district court.
