Two 24-year-olds arrested for scamming a 91-year-old woman out of 50,000 zloty in Praga Północ.
Arrest and Charges
Two 24-year-olds learned that police from the VI Warsaw District Police Headquarters would eventually uncover the truth after they fraudulently extorted 50,000 zloty from an elderly woman in Praga Północ. During the arrest, police secured drugs, mobile phones, documents belonging to other people, and several thousand zloty from their rented apartment.
The prosecutor presented criminal charges to both suspects, and the court temporarily arrested them. The investigation is being conducted by the Warsaw-Praga Północ District Prosecutor’s Office.
Elderly Woman Scam Details
On January 6, a woman called a 91-year-old resident of Praga Północ, claiming to be her granddaughter. Crying, she explained she needed cash because she faced imprisonment for causing an accident. During the conversation, her “son-in-law” repeatedly joined in.
The victim agreed to give 50,000 zloty to a young “policeman” who appeared at her apartment. After he left, she called her real granddaughter, who alerted her that she had been scammed. The women then informed Praga Północ police.
Police Investigation and Evidence
Criminals specializing in property crime immediately took up the case. After a series of operational activities, they located and arrested the two 24-year-olds in an apartment in Warsaw’s city center.
During the search, police secured several mobile phones, SIM cards, over 8,000 zloty, an electronic scale, a large quantity of drugs, as well as identity documents and a payment card belonging to other people.
Charges and Potential Penalties
The prosecutor charged the suspects with fraud against the elderly woman and possession of a significant amount of marijuana (almost 200 grams). The young woman faces additional charges for hiding documents and appropriating a payment card belonging to others.
For these alleged crimes, the suspects face up to 10 years in prison.
Court Decision
The court granted the prosecutor’s request and temporarily arrested the suspects.
