President of Częstochowa Detained by CBA as City Searches Underway

President Krzysztof M. of Częstochowa has been detained by the Central Anticorruption Bureau, with searches ongoing in the city.

The information about the arrest was announced in the Sejm by the spokesperson for the Minister Coordinator of Special Services, Jacek Dobrzyński. Since morning, CBA agents have been carrying out procedural activities including detention, searches, and securing documentation. The operations are being conducted on the order of a prosecutor from the National Prosecutor’s Office.

The arrest took place before 9:00 AM in Częstochowa, near the residence of Krzysztof M. The spokesperson noted that no formal charges have been presented at the time of the arrest. The content and scope of the charges will be decided by the prosecutor after further proceedings.

Legal Process

After the operations in Częstochowa, the detained president is to be transported to the prosecutor’s office in Katowice, where he will be interrogated. Investigators will also decide whether to apply to the court for preventive measures, including possible provisional arrest.

Political Background

Krzysztof M. has been serving as President of Częstochowa since 2010. Previously, from 2002-2007, he sat on the Częstochowa City Council, where he was the Vice-Chairman. He was affiliated with the Democratic Left Alliance.

In 2005, he unsuccessfully sought a parliamentary seat, running from the SLD list. Two years later, in 2007, he was elected to the Sejm from the Left and Democrats list. In the 2010 local elections, he decisively defeated Izabela Leszczyna in the second round with 70.89% of the vote. He was re-elected in 2014 and 2018 in the first round, and again won in 2024.

The detention of the serving president of one of the largest cities in the Silesian region is an event of significant political and administrative importance.
