Presidential Office Retains Kornelia Wieczorek’s Silver Cross of Merit

Following public scrutiny regarding the academic achievements of 17-year-old Kornelia Wieczorek, the Presidential Office has decided not to revoke the Silver Cross of Merit awarded to her by President Karol Nawrocki.

The Controversy Surrounding Academic Claims

Kornelia Wieczorek, previously celebrated as a prodigy in neurobiology, faced severe backlash after investigators revealed her alleged medical assistance at the Białystok Oncology Center never occurred. Critics argued her scientific successes were merely school-level projects, questioning the legitimacy of the prestigious award she received in March 2026.

Hospital Denies Medical Involvement

The Białystok Oncology Center has officially refuted reports that the teenager assisted in surgical procedures. Spokesperson Monika Ferenc clarified the discrepancy between media portrayals and the reality of the student’s activities at the medical facility.

Presidential Office Refuses to Withdraw Honor

Despite the bypass of standard verification procedures for the presidential award, the Office of the President has confirmed the Silver Cross of Merit will not be rescinded. Officials maintain that the distinction was granted based on the teenager’s general scientific activity and contributions to student research.

Official Defense of the Decision

Minister Agnieszka Jędrzak defended the decision, stating that the teenager’s work should be viewed in the context of her age and educational stage. She dismissed the criticism as a manipulation of terminology and highlighted the student’s role in encouraging young women to pursue careers in science.
