Presidential Veto Creates Uncertainty in Labor Market

Polish businesses grow anxious as presidential veto looms over legislation extending legal status for Ukrainian workers.

Legislation Pending Presidential Signature

A bill on terminating provisions of the law on assistance to Ukrainian citizens due to the armed conflict in that country, along with amendments to other laws, awaits only the signature of the President of the Republic of Poland. Although he has several days until February 19, the situation among companies is becoming increasingly tense.

Legal stay for Ukrainian citizens is currently guaranteed only until March 4, 2025.

Businesses Express Concerns

Entrepreneurs are signaling concerns about the president’s signature, especially since the bill terminating the special act and extending the legal stay of Ukrainian citizens in Poland was presented by the government without proper advance notice and was processed at an accelerated pace – explains Nadia Winiarska, employment expert in the labor market department of the Lewiatan Confederation.

Uncertainty About Future Regulations

She adds that the entire situation creates uncertainty about whether solutions ensuring continuity of legal stay and employment will be introduced after this deadline expires.
