Prison officers will gather outside the Ministry of Finance in Warsaw on Wednesday, June 10, to protest proposed changes to housing allowance calculations that threaten to reduce monthly take-home pay.
Planned Protest at Ministry of Finance
Prison officers from across the country are set to demonstrate in front of the Ministry of Finance at Świętokrzyska 12 in Warsaw this Wednesday, June 10. The protest, organized by trade unionists, is a direct response to planned changes in the housing allowance system, which union representatives warn could lower the salaries of thousands of officers.
Dispute Over Housing Allowance Rates
The conflict centers on the housing allowance introduced for Prison Service officers at the start of the year. Current rates are determined by location, ranging from 1,800 PLN in Warsaw to 900 PLN in smaller localities, with provincial and district cities receiving 1,500 PLN and 1,200 PLN respectively.
Potential Financial Impact on Officers
Union officials estimate that the proposed revisions could affect over 16,000 officers. Calculations suggest that individual pay cuts could range from several dozen to 500 PLN monthly, with an average estimated loss of 300 PLN per officer.
Traffic and Transport Disruptions
The gathering is scheduled to take place between 11:45 and 14:30. Police may close Świętokrzyska Street if the crowd exceeds sidewalk capacity, which would force bus line 178 to divert via Mazowiecka, Plac Małachowskiego, and Królewska.
