The Medical University in Wrocław announced the death of Prof. Leszek Paradowski, who served as the university’s rector from 1999-2005. Farewell ceremonies will begin on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, at 10:00 AM at the church on Bujwida Street in Wrocław.
Academic and Professional Career
Prof. dr hab. Leszek Paradowski was born on January 27, 1946, in Leszno. He completed his studies at the Faculty of Medicine of the Medical Academy in Wrocław, where from 1970 he was employed at the Department and Clinic of Gastroenterology, which he headed from 1996 to 2016.
In 1978, he received the degree of Doctor of Medical Sciences, and in 1990, the degree of Habilitation Doctor. From 1999-2005, he served as rector of the Medical Academy in Wrocław, as Vice-Chairman of the Conference of Rectors of Medical Universities, and as a member of the Scientific Council at the Minister of Health.
Scientific Contributions
Prof. Paradowski was the author or co-author of approximately 350 full-text works, academic textbooks, 241 abstracts and conference communications. His main research focused on pathophysiology, diagnosis and treatment of digestive system diseases, particularly inflammatory bowel diseases and functional disorders.
He initiated the establishment of the Alzheimer’s Center in Ścinawa and founded the Alzheimer’s Foundation. He also established the Marshall and Warren medal, which became a prestigious international award for outstanding discoveries in gastrointestinal microbiology.
Awards and Recognition
Prof. Paradowski repeatedly received the Minister of Health Award for his scientific achievements. He was also awarded the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Rebirth of Poland, the Medal of the National Education Commission, the J. E. Purkyně Medal, the J. Mikulicz-Radecki Medal, and the Medal of the President of Wrocław.
In recognition of his contributions, he received the titles Bene Meritus from the Polish Medical Society, Honorary Ambassador of Polish Congresses from Polish tourism organizations, and in 2017, the prestigious Złoty OTIS award.
