Prosecutor to Summon Seven SOP Officials in Szydło Accident Case as Suspects

Prosecutor’s office will summon eight people, including seven State Protection Service officials, in connection with 2017 accident involving former PM Beata Szydło.

Eight People Summoned to Prosecutor’s Office

TVN24 reported on Wednesday, February 11, that the prosecutor’s office will summon eight people in connection with the accident of former Prime Minister Beata Szydło, which occurred in 2017. This concerns seven officials of the State Protection Service (then the Government Protection Bureau) and one civilian.

Some of them still work in the formation. “They will be summoned to answer as suspects” – the station reports. The prosecutor overseeing the case stated that they will be summoned at the end of February or beginning of March. The case is being handled by the Regional Prosecutor’s Office in Białystok.

Prime Minister Beata Szydło’s Accident Case

The accident of the then Prime Minister Beata Szydło’s motorcade occurred in Oświęcim on February 10, 2017. The prosecutor’s office accused the seicento driver Sebastian Kościelnik of causing it. The man was charged in the case just seven hours after the accident.

In his opinion, the prosecutor’s office in the proceedings “made many mistakes.” As Kościelnik said, many deficiencies were reported, but they were of no significance to the prosecutor. In February 2023, the District Court in Kraków conditionally discontinued his case for a year and found that it was the BOR driver who contributed to the accident.

After conducted audit, it was indicated that Kościelnik was charged “solely based on evidence in the form of testimonies of drivers and passengers, completely uncritically accepting their versions of events as correct and true.” It was assessed that investigators ignored the probability of “failure to fulfill duties by BOR officials.”

Investigation Reopened in April 2025

In April 2025, investigators reopened the investigation. As reported by the Regional Prosecutor’s Office in Białystok, it is being conducted, among other things, in the case of “exceeding powers and failure to fulfill duties by public officials” as well as “giving false testimony and concealing the truth when testifying as a witness by officials of the former Government Protection Bureau during activities conducted in the preparatory proceedings.”
