Prosecutors Investigate Police Raid on Telewizja Republika Chief’s Home

The Warsaw District Prosecutor’s Office has launched an investigation into potential police misconduct following a May 15 intervention at the private residence of Telewizja Republika editor-in-chief Tomasz Sakiewicz.

Investigation into police conduct

An investigation was initiated on June 2 following preliminary inquiries. The case stems from a May 15 police intervention at the Warsaw apartment of Tomasz Sakiewicz, the president and editor-in-chief of Telewizja Republika S.A.

The Warsaw District Prosecutor’s Office is examining allegations that officers from the Intelligence and Patrol Department of the Warsaw II District Police Command exceeded their authority. Investigators are looking into an unauthorized entry into Sakiewicz’s home under the pretext of a potential suicide threat.

Allegations of illegal detention and document forgery

A second line of inquiry concerns the alleged unlawful detention of a woman. Prosecutors are investigating claims that an officer handcuffed her behind her back without warning or prior legal summons.

The investigation also covers the suspected falsification of a detention report. According to the prosecutor’s office, the document was dated May 15 and drafted at the Warsaw II District Police Command on Malczewski Street. This is being treated under Article 271 of the Penal Code regarding public officials falsifying legal documents.

Coordinated threats and evidence handling

Prosecutors noted a separate ongoing investigation regarding a series of mass, coordinated threats sent to various institutions since May 13, primarily targeting individuals associated with Telewizja Republika. This case is being handled by the Warsaw-Praga District Prosecutor’s Office.

Regarding evidence, the Warsaw District Prosecutor’s Office stated that body camera footage from the intervention will not be released at this stage to protect the integrity of the investigation.

Sakiewicz alleges criminal organization

Commenting on the probe, Tomasz Sakiewicz stated it is difficult to believe the officers acted on their own initiative. He alleged the existence of an organized criminal group within the police force responsible for the intrusion, the detention of his assistant, and the subsequent falsification of official records.
