Prosecutors Seek Three‑Month Detention of Judge Ziobro

Polish prosecutors have asked the district court to order a three‑month provisional arrest of former justice minister Zbigniew Ziobro, citing flight risk and possible procedural interference.

Request for Provisional Detention

On Thursday, prosecutors submitted a formal request to the Warsaw‑Mokotów district court for the temporary jailing of Ziobro. They seek a period of three months, pending further proceedings.

Grounds for Temporary Arrest

The prosecutor’s office lists three reasons: the possibility of flight or concealment, the danger of tampering with the investigation, and the threat of a severe sentence if found guilty. They also note that Ziobro has no fixed place of residence in Poland.

Ziobro’s Proposal for Foreign Interrogation

Ziobro suggested that the interrogation be conducted remotely from abroad, citing Brussels or Budapest as potential sites. He implied that this would allow him to answer questions while staying outside Poland.

Prosecutors’ Counterarguments

Chancellor spokesman Przemysław Nowak rejected the suggestion, saying there is no basis for accommodating it. He argued that essential investigative procedures cannot effectively be carried out from another country.

Charge Count and Fund of Justice

The prosecution plans to file 26 charges against Ziobro related to the Fund of Justice. As the former minister of justice, he was responsible for distributing the fund’s resources.
