Prosecutors Summon Former Deputy Minister Michał Woś as Suspect

The Regional Prosecutor’s Office in Poznań has summoned former PiS parliamentarian Michał Woś for questioning on May 28 regarding alleged irregularities during his tenure overseeing the Prison Service.

Prison Service Investigation

RMF FM reporter Krzysztof Zasada confirmed that investigators have scheduled the interrogation of Michał Woś in his capacity as a suspect. A specialized team in Poznań is currently examining allegations of official misconduct, mismanagement, and abuse of power within the penitentiary system.

Michał Woś served as Secretary of State at the Ministry of Justice between 2020 and 2023. During this period, he was responsible for the Prison Service under then-Minister Zbigniew Ziobro. In February, Minister of Justice Waldemar Żurek submitted a request to the Sejm Marshal to strip Woś of his parliamentary immunity in relation to this investigation.

Allegations of Misconduct

The National Prosecutor’s Office initiated proceedings following reports from the Director General of the Prison Service. The investigation focuses on irregularities concerning the creation of the Prison Service’s Internal Inspectorate, recruitment procedures, and the expenditure of institutional funds.

Authorities allege that public officials, including the former Secretary of State, abused their powers by hiring individuals without required qualifications or formal recruitment processes. Furthermore, investigators are reviewing evidence suggesting that official ranks were granted prematurely in violation of the 2010 Prison Service Act.

Pegasus Software Charges

Woś is also facing separate charges regarding the purchase of Pegasus spyware. In October of last year, the National Prosecutor’s Office filed an indictment accusing him of exceeding his authority and failing to fulfill his duties.

The charges stem from the transfer of 25 million PLN from the Justice Fund to the Central Anti-Corruption Bureau (CBA) for the acquisition of Pegasus software. Prosecutors allege that Woś misappropriated entrusted funds to the detriment of the public interest, an offense that carries a potential sentence of up to 10 years in prison.
