A new IBRiS poll for Rzeczpospolita reveals that 50.7 percent of Poles oppose drafting a new constitution, while 41.5 percent support the initiative recently championed by Karol Nawrocki.
Poll results on constitutional reform
In a survey conducted by IBRiS on May 8-9 among 1,067 participants, 24.9 percent of respondents expressed strong support for a new constitution, with 16.6 percent leaning toward approval. Conversely, 28.5 percent firmly opposed the move, and 22.2 percent were inclined to say no, while 7.8 percent remained undecided.
The Council for a New Constitution
On May 3, Karol Nawrocki announced the first members of his Council for a New Constitution. The group includes Marek Jurek, Ryszard Legutko, Anna Łabno, Ryszard Piotrowski, Józef Zych, Julia Przyłębska, and Barbara Piwnik. The council is expected to eventually include representatives from parliamentary groups.
During the May 3 celebrations, Nawrocki stated that the next phase involves incorporating various experts, constitutionalists, and legal professionals. He emphasized that the diversity of the council’s members is intended to ensure an honest and responsible debate on the state’s continuity.
Tusk dismisses initiative as political posturing
Prime Minister Donald Tusk rejected the proposal, stating on May 4 that he would not participate in what he labeled as political games. Tusk clarified that while he is open to serious discussions regarding the constitution, he refuses to treat the current initiative as a legitimate effort.
