Putin Accuses NATO of Attempting to “Plunder” Russia, Targets Finland

During a May 9 Victory Day press conference, Vladimir Putin claimed NATO anticipated Russia’s collapse to plunder its assets and specifically questioned Finland’s decision to join the alliance.

Allegations of NATO’s Intentions

Vladimir Putin stated that following the start of the “special military operation” in Ukraine, NATO members expected a swift Russian collapse. He claimed the alliance calculated that they could plunder Russian enterprises and cause the financial system to fail, leaving the population on the streets.

Criticism of Finland’s NATO Accession

The Russian leader questioned Finland’s decision to join NATO, finalized on April 4, 2023, noting that no territorial disputes existed between Russia and Helsinki prior to the expansion. Putin asserted that Finland joined the alliance in hopes of seizing opportunities resulting from a potential Russian collapse.

Putin further accused Finland of conducting military activities at the border, specifically mentioning the construction of a border along the Sestra River.

NATO as a Strategic Threat

The Kremlin continues to promote a narrative that NATO is a direct threat to Russia’s territorial integrity and the security of its citizens, suggesting the alliance seeks the significant weakening or dissolution of the Russian state.

Shift in Regional Security Dynamics

Finland’s move away from long-term military neutrality has increased the NATO-Russia border by 1,300 kilometers, creating a strategic point in the Baltic region. In 2021, Moscow had demanded that NATO block new memberships to keep Finland and Sweden within Russia’s sphere of influence.

Hybrid Warfare and Border Tensions

Finnish authorities have regularly reported increased Russian military activity, including the modernization of infrastructure and troop movements. Due to the threat of “hybrid warfare” conducted by the Kremlin, Helsinki has temporarily closed several border crossings.
