Despite declaring a ceasefire, Russia states its forces will be prepared for any Ukrainian provocations or aggressive actions during the Orthodox Easter period.
Zelensky Responds to Ceasefire Announcement
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky previously proposed a ceasefire for Easter, stating on March 30th that Ukraine was ready to suspend hostilities during the holiday period, but not at the expense of its dignity or independence.
Kremlin’s Initial Skepticism
The Kremlin initially responded skeptically to the idea of a ceasefire and had not made a final decision on the matter as of Thursday. Following the Kremlin’s statement, Ukrainian representatives did not immediately comment.
Past Ceasefire Declaration
Last year, Putin also announced a halt to combat operations for a day and a half during Orthodox Easter. Both Russia and Ukraine accused each other of numerous ceasefire violations at that time, though the intensity of fighting did decrease significantly.
Russian Forces Prepared for Potential Aggression
According to a Kremlin statement, Russian forces will remain prepared to respond to any “provocations” or “aggressive actions” from the Ukrainian side. Russia expects Ukraine to follow its example in observing the ceasefire.
