Putin Appoints Georgy Michno as New Russian Ambassador to Poland

Russian President Vladimir Putin formally named Georgy Michno ambassador to Poland on March 3, following months of speculation.

Appointment Confirmed

President Putin signed the decree appointing Georgy Michno as the new Russian ambassador to Poland on Tuesday, March 3. Russian media first reported in July of the previous year that Michno would be the ambassador, but these reports were quickly withdrawn, citing “technical issues.”

Background of Georgy Michno

Georgy Michno, born in 1972, received the rank of envoy extraordinary and minister plenipotentiary in Russia’s diplomatic service in 2018. His career roles include heading the Pan-European Cooperation Department at Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, serving as a deputy representative to international organizations in Vienna, and directing the Department for New Challenges and Threats at the Russian MFA.

Previous Ambassador’s Controversies

Sergey Andreev served as Russian ambassador to Poland from 2014 to 2025. He was summoned to Poland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs multiple times, notably in 2015 for claiming Polish policy led to the “catastrophe” in September 1939. In 2024, Andreev failed to appear at the Polish MFA following a summons; Poland demanded explanations after a Russian missile violated its airspace. Andreev justified his absence, stating he saw “no point” in discussing the matter without Polish evidence.

In May 2022, an Ukrainian activist threw red paint at Andreev as he attempted to lay a wreath at the Soviet Soldiers’ Cemetery-Mausoleum in Warsaw. The investigation into this incident was discontinued by the prosecutor’s office in June 2023. In early December of the previous year, Putin appointed Andreev ambassador to Slovakia.
