Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in St. Petersburg on Monday, offering support and mediation efforts.
Putin Expresses Hope for Iran’s Resilience
During the meeting, President Putin expressed hope that the Iranian people would overcome what he described as a “difficult period” and that peace would soon prevail, according to Reuters.
Russia Offers Mediation After US and Israeli Attacks
Russia has offered to mediate in an attempt to restore calm in the Middle East following attacks by the US and Israel, which Moscow has condemned. Russia has repeatedly offered to store Iran’s enriched uranium as a way to “de-escalate tensions,” but the United States has not taken advantage of this offer.
Continued Strategic Ties Confirmed
Putin stated that Russia intends to continue its strategic relationship with Iran.
Putin’s Commitment to Regional Interests
“For our part, we will do everything that serves your interests and the interests of all the nations of the region to ensure the earliest possible achievement of peace,” Putin told Araghchi, as reported by Russian state media.
Exchange of Gratitude and Commitment to Partnership
“Last week, I received a message from the Supreme Leader of Iran. I would like to ask you to convey my sincere gratitude and confirmation that Russia, like Iran, intends to continue our strategic relationship,” Putin added.
Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi also emphasized that relations between Russia and Iran would become stronger and thanked Putin for Moscow’s support.
