Putin Tightens Security Amid Reported Coup Fears

Unconfirmed reports indicate heightened security measures around Vladimir Putin following concerns of a potential coup and assassination attempts by Russian elites.

Security Measures Intensified Following Reports of Threats

A document revealed by the Vazhnye Istorii portal indicates Vladimir Putin’s security concerns emerged in March, coinciding with a series of assassinations of high-ranking Russian military officials. The threats include the possibility of an assassination attempt using drones orchestrated by elements within Russia’s political elite.

The increased protection involves expanding the authority of the Federal Protective Service (FSO), responsible for the security of top state officials.

Increased Scrutiny of Putin’s Inner Circle

New measures include a two-tiered vetting process for visitors to the presidential administration. Putin’s associates are prohibited from using mobile phones, and any devices used must be disconnected from the internet. Putin and his family have ceased visiting residences near Lake Valdai and in the Moscow region.

Unlike last year, Putin did not visit any military facilities this year.

Shoigu Linked to Potential Coup Attempts

Unofficially, Vladimir Putin reportedly fears a coup d’état. Former Defense Minister and current Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu is allegedly “associated with the risk of a coup attempt.” Despite retaining “significant influence over the military,” Shoigu’s position has weakened following the arrest of his former deputy, Ruslan Tsalikov, in early March.

This incident is viewed as a potential breach of informal security guarantees for the elite, and experts believe a sense of security among top officials is crucial for maintaining the current power structure in Russia.

FSB Resources Redirected to Monitor Government

Vazhnye Istorii reports that some of the report’s findings have been confirmed by sources. A Federal Security Service (FSB) official stated that obtaining warrants for surveillance in non-political criminal cases has become difficult, as “all equipment has been redirected to wiretapping the government and other authorities.”

Putin Skips Victory Day Parade Amid Security Concerns

No State Duma deputies received invitations to the Victory Day military parade on May 9th in Moscow’s Red Square. The day commemorates the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany in the Great Patriotic War (1941-1945).

Putin Seeks Assurances from Trump

A recent lengthy phone conversation between Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump occurred as Putin attempts to resolve various issues before the U.S. election campaign, anticipating that Trump’s options will become limited as the election nears.

Kowal: Putin Prioritizes Personal Security

According to Polish MP Paweł Kowal, Putin may be attempting to secure “safety for himself.” Kowal stated that Putin’s primary concern is ensuring his own safety, that of his family, and his assets, fearing internal revolt as has historically occurred in Russia.

Putin is mindful of past revolutions and unrest in Russia, often stemming from policies that resulted in significant losses for the country. Kowal believes current policies are leading to Russia’s potential disintegration, a process that will be turbulent and involve numerous shifts in the coming years.
